Autumn's clear skies, spring's rhododendrons, quiet winter trails and green monsoon valleys — what to expect in each season.
Table of contents
You can trek somewhere in Nepal in every month of the year. The question is which trail, and what you are willing to trade for fewer crowds.
Autumn: September to November
The classic season. The monsoon washes the air clean, skies are reliably clear and daytime temperatures are comfortable. It is also the busiest time, so book flights and lodges early, especially for Everest in October.
Winter: December to February
Crisp, clear and quiet. Lower treks such as Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and the Langtang valley are excellent. High passes like Thorong La and Larkya La can close after heavy snow, and nights at altitude are very cold.
Spring: March to May
The second peak season. Rhododendron forests flower in red and pink, days are warm, and it is expedition season on Everest. Haze can soften the views by late May.
Monsoon: June to August
Rain, leeches and cloudy mornings on most trails, and Lukla flights are less reliable. It is, however, the best time for rain-shadow regions such as Upper Mustang and the Tibet side of the Himalaya, and for the Kailash pilgrimage.
Festivals to plan around
Dashain and Tihar in autumn bring family celebrations across the country, and Mani Rimdu at Tengboche monastery (usually October or November) is a highlight of an Everest trek.
