Frequently asked questions
Visas, permits, altitude, payments and life on the trail.
Before you book
No. Treks graded Easy or Moderate suit anyone who exercises regularly and can walk 5–6 hours a day. For Challenging treks and peak climbs we recommend prior multi-day hiking, and we will talk through your fitness before you book.
Every trip runs as a private departure for you and the people you book with. You set the date, and we can add rest days or side trips without affecting anyone else.
For spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) we suggest two to three months ahead so domestic flights and the better lodges are secured. Shorter notice is often possible — just ask.
Yes. Most of our trips are adjusted in some way. Tell us your dates, fitness and interests and a trip planner will send a tailored itinerary and price within 24 hours.
Visa, permits and insurance
Most nationalities can get a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, or apply online beforehand. You need a passport valid for at least six months. Fees depend on the length of stay; check the Department of Immigration website for current rates before you travel.
Yes. All national park, conservation area and restricted area permits listed on your trip page are included, and we arrange them before you set out.
Yes. Your policy must cover trekking to the maximum altitude of your trip and emergency helicopter evacuation. Please send us a copy before departure.
On the trail
Teahouses are family-run mountain lodges with twin rooms, a heated dining room and a menu of local and western dishes. Lower villages often have attached bathrooms; higher ones are simpler.
Our itineraries build in acclimatisation days, guides carry a pulse oximeter and first-aid kit, and they are trained to spot early symptoms. If someone needs to descend, we arrange it immediately — including helicopter evacuation through your insurer.
One porter is shared by two trekkers and carries up to 20 kg in total, so plan on about 10 kg each. You carry a light daypack with water, layers and a camera.
Most teahouses offer charging and Wi-Fi for a small fee. Signal and power become less reliable above about 4,000 m, so bring a power bank.
Payments and cancellations
A deposit confirms your booking and the balance is paid on arrival in Kathmandu, by bank transfer, card or cash. You receive a written invoice for every payment.
Mountain weather regularly delays flights. We rebook the next available flight, can arrange a helicopter at extra cost, and recommend one or two spare days at the end of any Everest itinerary.
Cancellation terms depend on how close to departure you cancel. The full policy is on our Terms & Conditions page, and you can move your date instead of cancelling in most cases.
Still have a question?
Send it over. A trip planner who has walked the route will answer, usually within a few hours.
